Prepare Your Fairbanks Home for Thanksgiving
Can you believe we’ll all be sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner in just three weeks? If you recently decided to buy a home in Fairbanks and will be hosting guests for the very first time, you might feel a lot of pressure to pull off a flawless meal. While there’s a lot of preparation that goes into playing host/hostess for your first holiday, it’s nothing that can’t be managed with some proper planning and organization. To save you time, stress, and the headache that often accompanies out-of-town guests, we’ve created a handy timeline to ensure you’re on track to a picture-perfect Turkey Day.
Three weeks before Thanksgiving
Get a general idea of the dishes you plan to make as well as the dishes your guests plan to bring. As you start planning your menu, you can figure out which recipes use the same oven temperature so they can cook simultaneously. Coordinating your oven schedule now will make sure you’re thoroughly prepared on the big day.
Two weeks before Thanksgiving
It’s time to finalize your guest list and figure out what size turkey you will need. Call your local grocery store to reserve a bird so you’re not scrambling to find one and defrost it in the days leading up to Thanksgiving.
One week before Thanksgiving
Change the batteries in your smoke detector in case of a kitchen disaster. You can also begin tidying up your spare bedroom, and putting a basket together for your guests. Fresh fruit, nuts, bottled water, and soft robes will make their stay more comfortable.
The weekend before Thanksgiving
Create a detailed shopping list with everything you need to prepare and serve Thanksgiving dinner. Your first trip to the store probably won’t be your last. You’ll also want to ensure your exterior lights are working and that your driveway is shoveled and cleared of ice.
The week of Thanksgiving
Prepare all dishes that will be served chilled, and get a head start on dessert and your side dishes. Cover everything and refrigerate. You’ll probably need to make another run to the grocery store for some last-minute essentials. Don’t forget to pick up the turkey!
Thanksgiving Day
Wipe down kitchen surfaces, set the dining room table, and while your turkey roasts, cook the side dishes. As you feast with family and friends, you can warm your dessert in the oven. Finally, leave the dishes for later! Kick back and relax. You deserve it.
Hopefully this countdown to Thanksgiving is helpful as you start thinking about how you’ll impress your guests on the big day.
