Explore the Tanana Valley State Fair!

It’s hard to believe it’s already August! Because we have such a short summer season here in Fairbanks, we like to take advantage of the warm weather while we can. And for many, summer just isn’t complete without a trip to the Tanana Valley State Fair. A long-standing tradition in the Interior of Alaska, the event always kicks off on the first Friday of August and continues through the following weekend. This year, the Tanana Valley State Fair gets started tomorrow, August 2nd. If you haven’t attended in the past, here’s a brief overview of what you can expect.

Contests
The Tanana Valley State Fair hosts a wide variety of contests, in which participants can show off their most unusual skills. A bubble gum blowing contest, lawnmower races, a texting competition, and a watermelon-eating contest are just a handful of the competitive events you can enter or watch at this year’s fair.

Special Events
Children 12 and under will love Kid’s Day at the Tanana Valley State Fair for the petting zoo, balloon animal artists, and track and field competition. Foodies won’t want to miss the BBQ & Blues Cook-Off this Sunday, and seniors are treated to a free lunch on Wednesday for Heritage Day. There’s something special going on each day at the fair!

Entertainment
From comedic acts, to dance performances, to live music, to magic shows, the list of entertainers goes on and on at the Tanana Valley State Fair. Multiple venues host events all day long, so you’re sure to find something up your alley in between bites of BBQ and dips in the dunk tank.

Food
Speaking of BBQ, what’s a state fair without a bunch of delicious food to sample? The Tanana Valley State Fair has something to please everyone’s palate from traditional fair food to exotic dishes you can’t resist. 45 food booths in all will keep everyone happy and satisfied.

There’s something for everyone at the Tanana Valley State Fair. Quite literally! There are countless contests, attractions, competitions, exhibits, performances, and activities to explore over the next nine days. If you’re planning to buy a home in Fairbanks, we highly recommend making a stop (or two) at the Tanana Valley State Fair. Not only will you get a taste of the local culture, you’ll also get a chance to mingle with some of your future neighbors.
