To give you an idea of what lies ahead in the recreation department during the colder months, take a look at our favorite outdoor activities below.
If you’re prepared to brave the winter elements, there are some scenic opportunities for hiking in Fairbanks. The Chena River Recreation Area has miles of maintained trails where you can take a walk or go for a run with a panoramic view of the Alaskan wilderness.
Cruising through the Alaskan wilderness on a snowmobile is a thrilling way to experience the outdoors in Fairbanks. The White Mountains National Recreation Area is located just one hour outside of Fairbanks and has more than 200 miles of trails to explore.
The Birch Hill Recreation Area is home to a number of cross-country ski trails where Fairbanks residents and visitors can enjoy the beautiful winter scenery. The area is free to access and is open to the public.
If you’ve never tried ice fishing, spend a day learning the old native skill from an experienced guide. Day tours are available through 1st Alaska Outdoor School. There’s nothing more satisfying that catching and eating your own dinner – if only for one night.
