Easy Tips to Prepare Your Alaskan Home for Fall and Winter

Fall is officially here in Alaska! The kids are back in school, temperatures have already started to dip and the leaves are now turning colors and falling. Soon enough, we'll be tempted to turn up the heat and settle in for the long months ahead. But is your Alaskan home prepared?

Clean your gutters
Clogged gutters can cause serious problems like water damage to interior falls, leakage through your foundation into your basement, rodent infestations and more. Not to mention, in the winter months, clogged gutters can lead to ice dams. Now is the time to clean them out and run water though them—you can do so with a hose—to ensure there are no blockages.

Clean your fireplace and chimney
When the weather turns cold, Alaskan residents will light fires to keep themselves and their homes warm. You may clear out the ash and old, charred wood from the fireplace, but it is wise to have your chimney cleaned by a professional. 

Inspect your HVAC system
Before you touch that thermostat, it is important to have your heating system inspected. You can also check around your home to make sure vents are not obstructed by furniture, drapery or carpet.

Look for air leaks
Alaskan homeowners can easily walk around their home feeling for common areas where air might be escaping— around window frames, doors and wall cracks. If you can feel air coming through these areas, you will want to take the time to seal them before winter rolls around and your heating bills start to rise.

Replace your screen doors and windows
If you have lightweight screen doors and windows, now is the time to remove, clean and store them for the witner. You can swap out your screen door for a heavy-duty model that will withstand the fall rains, wind and cold temperatures. The same goes for screens on windows— now is the time to replace them with storm windows.
