What You Should Know About Shopping for an Alaska Home in the Winter

Gone are the days where homebuyers only searched for properties in Alaska when the weather was warmer, they happened upon a listing in the newspaper, or drove by a For Sale sign. In today's Alaskan real estate market, buyers are always switched "on," constantly looking for properties on their smartphones and computers, even setting up search parameters so potential homes land in their email inbox.

It doesn't pay to wait as a homebuyer in Fairbanks, Anchorage, Eagle River, Palmer, Wasilla, or North Pole. Your dream home could be waiting for you—even in the winter months—so you'll want to consider the following perks of shopping for properties when there's still snow on the ground.

You can see the home at its worst
Homes do show better when the grass is green, the landscaping is fresh and floral, and sunlight is streaming through the windows. However, shopping for homes in the winter means you can easily spot the flaws in a property without being distracted by all of the above. You'll be able to notice drafty windows, noise in the area, and privacy concerns— which can ultimately help you make your decision as a buyer

You can ask to see seasonal photos
You may be viewing the property during the dark, cold days of winter, but that doesn't mean you can't ask the agent to see photos of the property during the summer or fall. If they have them, you'll be able to see what the property looks like when the snow is gone and the flowers are blooming.

You could get a deal
While it is not the case for every home listed during the winter, a listing this time of year could signal a deal in the making. Some home sellers will be motivated to move as they originally listed in the fall (or before!) or have another motivating factor such as a job change with a deadline. Your interest and offer could prompt them to come down in price or reach another compromise in your favor!

No matter the season, you can count on Madden Real Estate to help you find the best property in Fairbanks, Anchorage, Eagle River, Palmer, Wasilla, North Pole, or the surrounding areas!
